I’m not a makeup artist – I can barely put on mascara! I only wear make-up for special occasions. You'll see me most of the times with a messy bun (oh wait, I just chopped my hair off last week so maybe a tiny, messy bun) and some mascara at the most. On weekends I might get fancy with some lip gloss and light make-up. I keep it super simple.
Are professional hair and makeup worth the money for a portrait photo session?
For the portrait sessions I offer, I recommend to book professional make-up services with one of the make-up artists I work with. It’s an amazing investment for several reasons. I sometimes watch the hair and makeup artists, here Emma from Emma Collins Beauty in complete awe. I will never understand the techniques and magic they do on my clients. As a professional photographer, I can tell you that hair and makeup can make a big difference in how my clients’ photos come out.
Is there a difference about portraits with professional make-up and hair?
When hair is professionally done, it stays in place better, and for a longer time. That’s important when we're doing a portrait session in different locations and if it involves outfit changes, here my portrait studio in Richmond Hill and my bathtub. Everything looks smoother, softer and shinier with fewer flyaways.
Makeup shows up differently on camera than in person. Professional makeup artists know this, and they apply specific makeup for portrait photo sessions. Applying make-up might be something you do on a daily basis, and you do it well, but makeup artists know how to ensure that your makeup will look perfect on camera (as well as off). It’s easy to under- or over-apply!
Is there a difference in the way clients act when they have had their hair and makeup done?
Absolutely! If you’re worried about how you’re going to look in front of my camera, that certainly doesn’t help capture the moment. For many women, this is the first time taking professional photos. Having professional hair and makeup done can give you just a little confidence boost, which shows in your photos! Do you remember how you feel a little bit better when you put some extra time and effort into your hair and makeup? It is the same principle — except better because make-up artists are professionals!
Once you book your session(s) with me I will make recommendations on which make-up artist to use for your maternity, motherhood, nursing and newborn sessions. Most of my maternity clients go on a dinner date after their photo session, and I always try to make recoomendations on where to eat. Just an extra service I offer in my customized portrait sessions.
