If you’ve been wondering when to schedule your maternity session, you’re not alone. One of the questions I hear most often is some version of: “Is it too early? Am I too far along? Did I miss my window?” The good news is that there’s more flexibility than you might think — but there is a sweet spot, and knowing it ahead of time makes everything easier.
Here’s everything you need to know about timing your maternity session so you feel your best and walk away with images you’ll treasure forever.

For most mamas, the ideal time for a maternity session is between 28 and 32 weeks of pregnancy. This window hits the perfect balance for a few reasons:
Book your session date during your second trimester so you have plenty of time to plan your outfits, choose your location, and go into session day feeling completely prepared.

There are a few situations where scheduling earlier makes a lot of sense:
High-risk pregnancy. If you’re navigating a high-risk pregnancy, I always recommend talking with your doctor first and then scheduling your session earlier — typically around 24–26 weeks. Capturing these beautiful moments while you’re feeling well gives you images to hold onto, whatever the journey ahead looks like.
You’re expecting multiples. Carrying twins or triplets means your belly grows much faster, and discomfort tends to set in earlier. For mamas expecting multiples, I recommend scheduling around 20–24 weeks to make sure we capture those bump portraits while you’re still comfortable and glowing.
Pregnancy announcements. If you want beautiful images to share the news with family and friends, we can do that anytime after 12 weeks — as soon as you feel ready and excited to be in front of the camera. These sessions have a completely different feel from a third-trimester maternity session and are so much fun.

This is the part I wish more mamas knew earlier: most photographers book out months in advance, especially during peak season on the Emerald Coast. Reaching out in your first or early second trimester — even if your session won’t be until 30 weeks — means you get your preferred date, your preferred time of day, and no last-minute scrambling.
Early booking also gives us time for a proper planning consultation where we talk through your wardrobe, your vision, and the best location for the look you want. Whether that’s a golden hour session at Henderson Beach State Park, the soft light of Grayton Beach, or the calm intimacy of my Niceville studio — we’ll have space to think it through together rather than rushing.
The earlier you think about when to schedule your maternity session, the more relaxed the whole experience feels.”
First — don’t panic. It’s not too late. I’ve photographed beautiful maternity sessions well into the third trimester, and the images are just as stunning.
There are just a few things to keep in mind if we’re working with a shorter timeline:
Reach out as soon as you can and we’ll figure out the best plan together.
A few things that make a big difference regardless of when you schedule:
Start thinking about outfits early. Flowing gowns and form-fitting dresses both photograph beautifully — the key is choosing something that makes you feel confident and gorgeous. If you’re an AKP client, you’ll have access to my full client closet with dozens of maternity gowns in every style, all pre-photographed so you can see exactly how they look before session day.
Think about where you want to be. The Emerald Coast has some of the most stunning backdrops imaginable — Henderson Beach State Park, the dunes along 30A, Grayton Beach — but my Niceville studio is also a beautiful option for a more intimate, timeless feel. We’ll talk through what fits your vision during our planning consultation.
Book your golden hour session. The light here during the hour before sunset is truly magical — warm, soft, and incredibly flattering. It’s my favorite time to photograph expecting mamas, and it makes a noticeable difference in the final images.

Your pregnancy is one of the most fleeting, beautiful seasons of your life. These weeks pass faster than you expect — and maternity portraits are the one thing that lets you pause and really hold onto them.
I’d love to be your Destin maternity photographer. Reach out to check availability and let’s start planning something beautiful together. If you’re still figuring out when to schedule your maternity session, I’m happy to talk it through — reach out and we’ll find the perfect timing for you.
