Spring family beach photos are my favorite sessions to photograph on the Emerald Coast. The golden light wraps around your family against those turquoise waters, and everything feels fresh and alive. Ordinary moments start to feel worth preserving. If you are planning your own session, I have great ideas for what to wear.

I recently photographed Jessica and her beautiful family at Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, and their session shows why spring family beach photos look so beautiful. The soft light and comfortable temperatures joined the white sand dunes to make a stunning backdrop, and their wardrobe choices matched it. Their coordinated coastal colors in whites and soft blues looked incredible against the emerald water and white sand. They reminded me how much a thoughtful outfit elevates an already beautiful setting.

Best Colors for Spring Family Beach Photos in Destin

Destin’s white sand and turquoise water create a distinct backdrop, and certain colors stand out against it. I recommend whites and soft ivories because they look timeless in natural spring light. Soft blues and aquas echo the ocean, while blush and sage add warmth and personality without competing with the scenery.

I steer families away from dark, heavy colors like black and deep navy. They feel out of place and look harsh against such a bright, airy setting. Neons and very bold colors reflect unflattering light onto skin. Logos and graphics pull attention away from the most important part of the frame, which is your family.

Choose two or three colors and spread them across your family’s outfits. Aim for a family that looks like it belongs together. Jessica’s family shows how. Everyone wore whites and soft blues, with subtle variations in texture and shade that let each person feel like themselves and still look cohesive.

What Each Family Member Should Wear

Everyone in your spring family beach photos can wear something different, as long as the colors work together.

Mamas: Flowing maxi or midi dresses in soft, breathable fabrics are my favorite for spring sessions. Chiffon and soft cotton blends catch the coastal breeze and create movement in photos. Off-shoulder or feminine necklines flatter, and three-quarter sleeves add coverage on your arms while still feeling elegant and beach-appropriate.

Dads: A light linen button-down in cream or soft blue with well-fitted khakis or light chinos works every time. Roll the sleeves for a relaxed beach look, empty your pockets, and check that everything fits well. That covers it.

Kids: Comfort comes first. Flowy sundresses or rompers suit girls, and linen shirts with comfortable shorts suit boys. Put shorts under dresses so kids can play freely, and choose something they enjoy wearing. Bare feet in the sand add to the magic, and some of my favorite moments happen when kids run and laugh and forget the camera is nearby.

A Note on Hair and Makeup

Hair and makeup come with the Family Signature Session. If you book the Beach Simplicity Session, you can add them for an additional fee.

Wind makes beach photos beautiful when you plan for it, and a relaxed style beats anything structured. Soft waves or a relaxed updo look great in photos and outlast a blowout in the coastal breeze. For makeup, choose a fresh, natural look with extra staying power. A light setting spray goes a long way. We plan your look around the wind and the light, so you feel polished when the session begins.

What to Avoid

Overly matching outfits, such as identical white shirts and jeans, feel dated and leave no room for personality. Trendy, highly styled pieces date your photos quickly. These images will hang in your home for years, and classic, simple pieces age better than whatever is trending right now.

Test every outfit for movement before your session. Sit down and reach up to see how the fabric moves. Check undergarments for visibility with flowing fabrics in bright sunlight, and steam everything the night before. Remove hair ties from your wrists and bulky items from your pockets before we start.
