Hello, beautiful mamas!
Can I let you in on a little secret? Spring has always been my absolute favorite season for beach photography on the Emerald Coast. Maybe it’s the way the golden light wraps around your family against those turquoise waters, or how everything feels alive and fresh in a way that makes the most ordinary moments feel worth preserving forever. If you’re wondering what to wear for spring beach photos, I’ve got some great ideas!
When considering what to wear for spring beach photos, it’s essential to choose outfits that enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings.
I recently had the joy of photographing Jessica and her beautiful family at Henderson Beach State Park in Destin, and their session perfectly captures why spring is such a magical time for family photos. The soft, natural light, the comfortable temperatures, the way those white sand dunes created the most stunning backdrop, and their wardrobe choices? Absolutely perfect. Their coordinated coastal colors in whites and soft blues looked incredible against the emerald waters and white sand, and it reminded me how much a thoughtful outfit can elevate an already beautiful setting.
So if you have a spring family session coming up and you’re staring at your closet wondering where to even begin, this one’s for you.

Destin’s white sand and turquoise water create such a distinct backdrop, and certain colors just sing against it. My top recommendations are whites, creams, and soft ivories because they’re timeless and always look stunning in natural spring light. Soft blues and aquas echo the ocean beautifully, while blush, peach, and sage add warmth and personality without competing with the scenery.
Hair and makeup should also reflect the essence of what to wear for spring beach photos.
What I’d steer you away from: dark, heavy colors like black, deep navy, and burgundy tend to feel out of place and can look harsh against such a bright, airy setting. Neons and very bold colors can reflect unflattering light onto skin. Logos or graphics on clothing will distract from the most important thing in the frame, which is your family.
Staying away from overly matching outfits is part of the strategy for what to wear for spring beach photos.
Think about the movement of your outfits and how they relate to what to wear for spring beach photos.
The sweet spot is choosing two or three colors and distributing them throughout your family’s outfits. Think “we belong together,” not matching uniforms. Jessica’s family is a perfect example. Everyone wore whites and soft blues, but with subtle variations in texture and shade that made each person feel like themselves while still looking cohesive and put together.
Mamas: Flowing maxi or midi dresses in soft, breathable fabrics are my absolute favorite for spring beach sessions. Chiffon, jersey, and soft cotton blends catch the coastal breeze beautifully and create so much movement in photos. Off-shoulder or feminine necklines are always flattering, and if you want a little extra coverage on your arms, three-quarter sleeves still feel elegant and beach-appropriate.
Dads: I’ll make this simple. A light linen button-down in white, cream, or soft blue paired with well-fitted khakis or light chinos is perfect every time. Roll the sleeves for a relaxed beach look, empty your pockets completely, and make sure everything fits well. That’s really all you need to think about!
Kids: Comfort first, always. Flowy sundresses or rompers for girls, linen shirts and comfortable shorts for boys. Put shorts under dresses so they can play freely, and choose something they’ll actually enjoy wearing. Bare feet in the sand are always part of the magic, and honestly some of my favorite moments happen when kids are running, laughing, and completely forgetting there’s a camera nearby.
Beach sessions mean wind, and wind is beautiful for photos but worth planning for. I always recommend a loosely styled look over anything too structured. Soft waves, a relaxed updo, or a simple half-up style tend to photograph beautifully and hold up much better than a blowout will in the coastal breeze. For makeup, think fresh and natural with a little extra staying power. A light setting spray goes a long way, and I always recommend working with a professional artist who understands outdoor lighting. I’m happy to share my trusted recommendations when we connect.
What to Avoid
Your confidence in your chosen outfits will enhance what to wear for spring beach photos.
Kids being kids often results in the best captures of what to wear for spring beach photos.
Overly matching outfits, when everyone is in identical white shirts and jeans, feel dated and don’t allow any personality to come through. Trendy, highly styled pieces can also date your photos quickly. These images will hang in your home for years, so classic and simple ages so much better than whatever is trending right now.
Practically speaking, test every outfit for movement before your session. Sit down, walk around, and reach up. Check undergarments carefully for visibility with flowing fabrics in bright sunlight, and steam everything the night before. Remove hair ties from wrists and anything bulky from pockets before we start.

Let me be really honest with you. I’ve worked with hundreds of families, and almost every mama comes in with the same worries. Will I look okay? Will my kids cooperate? Will I be awkward in front of the camera?
Here’s what I want you to know. You will look beautiful, I promise. Kids being kids makes for the best photos because those unscripted, authentic moments are pure gold. Perfection is actually pretty boring. What you’ll treasure years from now are the real ones, the laughing, the chaos, the genuine connection.
I’ll guide you through everything, so your only job is to show up, be present, and enjoy your family. I’ll take care of the lighting, the posing, the composition, and capturing all those moments in between. You just be you, and we’re going to have so much fun.
