The Best Beaches for Family Photos in Destin and 30A (And What to Know Before You Book)

best beaches for family photos in Destin

If you’re searching for the best beaches for family photos in Destin and 30A, you’ve come to the right place.

I’m Andrea, a Niceville-based portrait photographer who has spent over a decade photographing families along Florida’s Emerald Coast. I photograph exclusively at two locations: Henderson Beach State Park in Destin and Grayton Beach State Park along 30A. Both are stunning. Both are very different. And the one that’s right for your family depends on a few things I’ll walk you through below.

Why Beach Location Actually Matters for Your Photos

Not all Destin beaches photograph the same way. The sugar-white sand and emerald water are consistent throughout the Panhandle, but the setting — the dunes, the sea oats, the crowd level, the light — changes dramatically from one beach to the next.

I’ve photographed at a lot of locations over the years, and I keep coming back to Henderson and Grayton for the same reasons: they’re both state parks with wide, uncrowded stretches of beach that give us room to move and flexibility to find the perfect light. But they have very different personalities — and that difference is exactly why choosing the right one for your family matters.

Henderson Beach State Park — Destin

Henderson Beach State Park sits right on the edge of Destin, tucked between the tourist strip and the quieter residential side of town. It’s my go-to for families staying in or around Destin who want easy access without a long drive.

The dunes at Henderson are dramatic. There are long stretches of tall sea oats that create a beautiful, natural frame — especially gorgeous in golden hour light. If you’ve ever seen one of those photos where a family is walking through a corridor of waving dunes toward the water, Henderson is usually where that happens.

Henderson also has a lively, quintessentially Destin backdrop — you can see the coastline and city in the distance, which gives these images a sense of place that a lot of families love. If you want your photos to feel unmistakably like Destin, this is your beach.

Best for: Families staying in Destin, Miramar Beach, or Fort Walton Beach. Also wonderful for extended family sessions because there’s enough space to spread out.

Grayton Beach State Park — 30A

Grayton Beach State Park is one of the most photographed beaches in the entire Florida Panhandle — and for good reason. It consistently ranks among the top beaches in the country, and when you’re standing there at sunset, it’s easy to understand why.

Grayton sits along the 30A corridor near Santa Rosa Beach, which makes it the obvious choice for families renting along 30A — Blue Mountain Beach, WaterColor, Seaside, Rosemary Beach, Inlet Beach.

The light at Grayton in the last hour before sunset is extraordinary. The beach faces slightly southwest, which means the golden hour hits the sand and water in a way that makes everything glow. The peach and coral tones in the sky, the luminous green of the water — it’s just different from other locations.

It also has a slightly more intimate feel than Henderson, with a shorter stretch of beach that creates a cozier, more contained setting. Wonderful for smaller families or sessions focused on young children.

Best for: Families renting along 30A, couples celebrating anniversaries or expecting a new baby, and anyone who wants that iconic 30A coastal feel in their portraits.

So Which Are the Best Beaches for Family Photos in Destin and 30A?

If you’re staying in Destin, Fort Walton Beach, or Miramar Beach — Henderson is the practical choice, and it won’t disappoint.

If you’re staying along 30A — Grayton is the clear answer.

If you’re local to the Niceville or Fort Walton area, or if you’re flexible — I’ll ask you a few questions about the feel you’re going for, the ages of your kids, and what matters most to you visually. Then we’ll decide together.

Either way, I’ll handle all the logistics — parking, timing, permits — so you don’t have to think about anything except showing up and enjoying your family.

What to Know Before You Book a Destin Beach Session

Timing is everything. I photograph during the last 60–90 minutes before sunset, when the light is warm and soft and the crowds thin out. Early morning sessions are also available for families with very young children who are at their best before nap time.

Weather is not something to worry about. I reserve your session day plus a backup morning, so if the weather doesn’t cooperate, we reschedule without you losing your spot on my calendar. Storms roll in fast on the Emerald Coast — this is just how I work.

I work with visiting families all the time. If you’re coming to Destin for a week and want portraits while you’re here, I can work around your vacation schedule. I’d just encourage you to reach out before your trip rather than once you’re already here, since my calendar fills quickly in spring and summer.

Outfits are handled. I have a client wardrobe collection with curated dresses and pieces for women and children. For families who want to style their own outfits, I provide a color palette guide and inspiration board so everything looks cohesive in photos.

Ready to Plan Your Session?

If you’re ready to start planning, I’d love to hear from you. You can learn more about my Destin family photography sessions — including what’s included, how the process works, and what to expect from start to finish — or reach out directly through my contact form and I’ll be in touch soon.

Sessions book out 4–8 weeks in advance in spring and summer, so if you’re planning a trip or have a date in mind, sooner is always better.

I can’t wait to photograph your family along the Emerald Coast.
