If you’ve never had professional family photos taken on the beach before, it’s completely normal to feel a little unsure of what you’re walking into. What do you wear? What time do you show up? What do you do when your toddler refuses to cooperate? (Spoiler: it happens, and it’s fine.)
I’m Andrea, and I’ve been photographing families along Florida’s Emerald Coast for years. I want you to feel relaxed and excited before your Destin beach family session — not stressed — so here’s an honest, behind-the-scenes look at exactly what a Destin beach family session looks like from start to finish.

Most of my beach sessions take place at one of two locations: Henderson Beach State Park in Destin or Grayton Beach State Park along 30A.
Both are state parks, which means no busy resort crowds, no lifeguard stands in the background, and access to some of the most beautiful stretches of sugar-white sand on the Gulf Coast. Henderson is incredibly convenient if you’re staying in or near Destin. Grayton Beach has a quieter, more natural feel and is perfect if you’re along the 30A corridor.
When you book, I’ll recommend the location that makes the most sense for your family based on where you’re staying, the look you’re going for, and what’s working well that time of year.

Your Destin beach family session will be scheduled around golden hour — the last 45 to 60 minutes before sunset.
I know that sounds like a scheduling constraint, but trust me, it’s a gift. The light during that window is soft, warm, and flattering in a way that midday sun simply isn’t. It also means the beach is noticeably less crowded, the temperature has dropped, and everyone — including your kids — tends to be in a much better mood than they would be at noon in July.
I’ll send you your specific session time closer to your date. It shifts with the season, so summer sessions run later in the evening, while fall and spring sessions start a bit earlier.

Most Destin beach family sessions run about an hour.
For smaller families or simpler groupings, we can accomplish a lot in that time. For larger extended family sessions, we may want to plan for a little more. When you reach out to inquire, just give me a heads up on the size of your group so I can plan accordingly.
One thing I always tell families: an hour on the beach goes faster than you think, and it’s usually just the right amount of time before little ones hit their limit. We keep things moving, keep it fun, and work with your kids’ energy rather than against it.
Clothing is one of the biggest sources of stress before a session, and it really doesn’t have to be. The short version: coordinate without matching, lean into soft and neutral colors, and avoid busy patterns or bold logos.
I have a full guide on what to wear for beach family photos that goes into way more detail — including color palettes that look beautiful against the sand, what to avoid, and tips for dressing the kids. I’d highly recommend giving it a read before your session.
I also have a client closet at my Niceville studio with women’s pieces available to borrow at no charge, in case you’d like help pulling your look together.

Within a few days of your session, I’ll send over a sneak peek so you have something to share while I finish editing. Your full gallery is typically delivered within two to three weeks.
Your gallery will be an online, password-protected collection where you can view, download, and order your images. We’ll also have a conversation about prints and wall art if that’s something you’re interested in — because honestly, these deserve to be on your walls, not just on your phone.
What if my kids don’t cooperate? They almost never cooperate the whole time — and that’s completely okay. Some of my favorite images come from in-between moments: a kid mid-giggle, a dad doing something ridiculous to make everyone laugh, a toddler making a break for the water. I’m used to working with real families, not posed mannequins.
What if it rains or the weather is bad? Florida weather is unpredictable, especially in summer. If we’re dealing with weather that would genuinely impact the session, we’ll reschedule. I monitor the forecast closely and will be in touch if anything looks questionable.
Do I need to bring anything? Just yourselves, dressed and ready to go. If you have a young baby or toddler, a favorite toy or snack can help keep spirits up. Everything else is handled.
When should I book? As early as possible, especially if you’re visiting during peak season (spring break, summer, and fall), especially if you’re planning a Destin beach family session during peak season. Sessions during those times book out weeks — sometimes months — in advance. If you already know your vacation dates, now is the time to reach out.

I’d love to be your Destin beach family session photographer this season. Reach out through my contact page and tell me a little about your family and when you’re visiting — I’ll get back to you with everything you need to get on the calendar.
